The number of two card hands that can be made out of any given n-card Omaha hand is:
(n-1)((n-1)+1)/2
which reduces to:
n(n-1)/2
which is just a fancy way of saying:
1 + 2 + ... + (n-1)
Confused? Don't be. Just subtract one from the number of cards in the hand and then sum it with all the positive intergers below it as, in:
4 card Omaha 5 card Omaha 6 card Omaha4 - 1 = 3 5 - 1 = 4 6 - 1 = 5
3 + 2 + 1 = 6 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 10 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 15
How about Pineapple? That's right, only 3 2-card hands can be made from a Pineapple hand.
Now, just for fun, let's do 12 card Omaha using the first equation (even though we can only play it 3 handed.)
n(n-1)/2 where n=12
12(12-1)/2 =
12(11)/2 =
132/2 =
66
Now check and see if:
11 + 10 + 9 + 8 + 7 + 6 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 66
